The Theta Sound Healing Workshop consists of primordial vocals and instruments that naturally place the human brain into a theta like patterning. These instruments include East Indian electric Tambura, Australian Aborigines didgeridoo, and Tibetan singing bowls. Once heard, the listener automatically begins to relax, the brain becomes calm, as the essence of the total being of the listener is replenished.

As instruments are played and at various moments during the session Toni Pope will offer and provide primordial vocals. Primordial vocals include throat-singing/harmonic singing, micro-tonation, and multi-phonetical voicings - i.e. producing multiple tones simultaneously. Toni is a voice and sound practitioner who carries a unique ability to channel sacred dimensions of sound using her voice and theta sounding instruments.

During the course of the session intuitive concepts of voice and sound instruction will be given, as well as the opportunity to utilize the voice as a sacred sounding instrument. Concepts such as toning, harmonic singing, deep inner listening, and concsious breath work will be discussed and practiced. The benefits of this workshop vocal inhibition, voice placement , tone placement, toning, and tone isolation/multi-
phonetical singing

and afterward a wonderful performance from the Classic Quintet: Qasim Naqvi, Aakaash Israni, Casey Anderson, Scott Cezan and Meghan Fong we play very soft improvisational music. they are percussion, violin, alto sax, double bass and computer.

ood is as necessary as air and water for the maintaining of the body, the house of the soul. As times have progressed, we have become further separated from the source of our food, and it has become increasingly processed in order to keep up with demands of peoples living a life that is faster paced than ever. There was a time when we had an intimate relationship with the land. It is not difficult to see how that relationship has changed when we read the ingredients on the back of a microwave dinner. We have alienated ourselves from nature's way in order to pursue our own desires by exchanging our faith in the ability of nature to adequately provide for a dependence on the fruits of intellect and reason to dominate and control. You can see the true nature of a civilization by the way in which it feeds its people. It is food and its acquisition, or production, after all, which lies at its very foundation.

In "Simplified Gardening: Against Biotech Agribusiness" we'll take 3 hours to examine and discuss topics as broad as the source of life and as specific as the ingredients in the world's most popular herbicides, all starting from the basic principles behind "Do Nothing Farming" developed by Masanobu Fukuoka, author of "The One-Straw Revolution". From there, we'll look into some common methods of growing on smaller plots of land and in containers, and study traditional methods of pest and weed control via companion planting. After which we will examine some of the modern techniques of cultivation. All the usual boring lecture techniques, i.e. slide show, movie clips, and Q and A sessions will be present, but when it's all over, your head will be filled with a strong foundation of knowledge to being a lifelong practice in natural gardening.

CULTIVATION:

this is the process of making the human mark into the earth, but it is proper to exist in balance. this is not only a metaphor, but the beauty of it is that it extends, as the curl of a new tendril, out to the farthest and ultimate cyclic now. so this is important to know about, to explore, to ponder, to look at from different directions, to head in new directions, to put things into perspective and enjoy the work necessary to cultivate.

in our current urban living, we must find ways to reconnect with the elemental, in our bodies, our work, our food, with our fellow living beings, and our metaphysical and critical aspects. this begins with the child as artist: making things through a state of wonder, but now is the time to cultivate that human urge to create / make art in all forms : and know that this is our world too, and we are part of it.

it is also the cult of culture. it is the bravery of us to say that we can make our own culture, our own symbolic way or description or names for sacred or release or regeneration. it is the right of people to have rituals that nourish and speak with language they have had a hand in forming. it is different than before because it is now. that's all.

cultivation is mostly about absorbing and emitting energy. to behave with wisdom in our daily lives.
this evening / event / re-opened warehouse warming
is to foster.
it is about people, celebrating and mourning,
powerful forces of will and belief, knowing that there will be that one good spot
and all the work will be worth it.
and these will go in cycles
constantly.

first of all i apologize for this very personal account of zero-point. we had another site, but it has been compromised so i have redirected it to this free (therefore somehow immortal) chronicle of my own.

i have had a great adventure being the "we" of a venue, a community... i have sacrificed myself over and over and over...and it has cost me...and exhausted me,...but it has also been the most meaningful thing i have done, that makes me feel as if i died today, there would have been a thousand people who loved the space i sacrificed for. and i can be nothing but grateful and excited and tragically glad....the pain is intense, as the joy...

so i will be replacing these pages with all the documentation of zero-point. if there are duplicates i can't help it...i'm just trying to do right by the artists who have contributed and deserve recognition and documentation...further communication of their exuberance and craft. the magic will be here for posterity.

i can think of nothing else that is as important...

i am not an art writer, but i love writing and talking about art, it is what excites me, and it is my natural instinct to seek dialog after witnessing any work or performance that has caused my synapses to fire even more rapidly and connect making all sorts of new patterns in my brain, so if i offend by my lack of linguistic or factual expertise i apologize...i am so fired up though! and i want to share it...

the evening that has so captivated me was a presentation of mfa composers work created in the concert theatre intensive workshop, taught by anne lebaron and mark menzies. only about a week of time was available for these projects, and i was thrilled by the outcome of all five of the pieces, most especially the john cage open.

for me, who knows little about golf, and doesn't speak any other language fluently by any means, this performance was stellar...the lack of knowledge on my part only added to the piece by alex sramek. it was so good it didn't matter.

on the stage are random objects for making sound and to make sound off of. implements to 'hit' 'holes'. these 'holes' are suspended random objects which each of the two players 'swing at' using whatever household object they choose as their weapons. the piece was hilarious, i was crying with laughter because two 'commentators' in sportscoats using the hushed or chatting tones in rhythms recognizable as golf talk to detail the two competators angle, 'club,' history of the 'course' and discussion of past events. one spoke in english the other in japanese.

the competators: 'the hammer' and 'lionheart' are each called to the stage, go two rounds and are eventually interviewed, and each player's technique and past plays are described through the language of the commentator. i can't take the whole day to describe it now, i want to continue it as an art form / sport. i would love to go to or host or play in the next john cage open! what a great idea! the other pieces were amazing as well.

there was an ingenius version of a string quartet by bobby halvorson, where the quartet literally playing with string. on the box stands the puppeter, who has strings attached to the conductor, a lovely woman with the most expressive hands...she is in front of four musicians, all who have made their instruments out of string. there is a tiny stringed instrument resembling a cello the size of a violin, another is an instrument which is hit with string mallets, then there is an instrument that reminded me of an accordian, and another which i couldn't see, but it looked as if the musician were wrapped up in string. they played a full piece, very attentive to the conductor, their countenance and movements exactly those of a string quartet. and of course there was no sound, except the occassional hit in a non-stringy place, or the audience doing any more than breathing. i really liked this one. the concept was excuted so beautifully, and it had a strange lovliness, and also was a bit disturbing in that the members of the piece, the conductor and musicians were not real, not really able to make music, they were puppets, and therefore making the only sounds puppets could make at the direction of the puppeteer as well as the conductor. it was multi-layered and i watched enthralled.

there was a solid and engaging piece by taylor brizindine called au puch. it was 'text transcribed from a dead city radio production by william s. burroughs entitled 'ah pook is here...[and is]...written partially from the point of ah puch, the mayan deity of destruction....sit and listen to the man in the easy-chair as the mayan god of destruction places a shotgun in his mouth and pulls the trigger'... using two harps, organ, violin, cello, and a gong which stood in the center....

a man in a suit and tie sits center stage reading from a newspaper...names of mayan origin, names that questions and answers about the end of the world. off-stage a megaphone voice responds and requests information. the music was beautiful, and the presentation felt like a finality ritual, as if this man was the last on earth to broadcast before the ultimate disintegration of the universe.

another piece : 'chain' by kwan fai (felix) lam, was a visceral, emotional, vision and sound performance of strange structures of conflict and power, conveyed through movement, subtle then building to chaotic instruments engaging in sonic, linguistic and spatial relationships. this piece animated the characters with their individual voices, a cellist, a flautist, a violinist, and a clarinet.

a blindfolded cellist takes center stage in a chair, the other instruments are harsh to her and keep her in her place, a violinist enters and acts as another voice, in a different timbre, which seems to be a narrator of the choas. there were even fights between the flautist and the clarinet who scoured the stage for chairs and stands blocking each other physically and shouting both words and notes...

the last piece was by james klopfleisch, the ultra-talented, witty, side-splitting commentator from the john cage open. it was a piece called jingle couch. a bedspring with pvc pipe edges for four bearers and musicians to carry / perform with. decorated with found object percussion, and other
odd objects: a mannequin hand, bottles, tinsel and other holiday paraphernalia,...the audience was told to follow the jingle couch, and the band leader, with a giant pipe spiraled with festive green, began the ceremonial trek to the reception. the bearers at the four corners were instructed to move in different ways to change the sounds of the couch as they walked, skipped, loped, according to the instructions of the leader.

this was one of the most satisfying and entrancing concerts i've seen. talking to anne lebaron afterwards she gave voice to many things i think of when making art or hosting / supporting it...she said that she loved the traditional presentation of music, but it was exciting to do new things. to think outside just wearing black and sitting in a pit and having a conductor or written music to perform.

this was a fabulous night.

the future of intellectual property and the artists' immortal and mortal self

i guess traditionally there are three factors here :

one - you are an artist and have to do art and therefore will do art whether you are paid or not, it is a necessity to do art.

two: artists need to eat, and have hot water, or at least water, and to be safe, and to have some place to do their art. ... See More

three: either an artist will have another source of income or they must get paid for their art.

i was listening to npr and the cleveland orchestra is on strike so they can keep the 5% inflation raise in pay. their salaries being average $115.000, one of the best in the world...one woman, a patron of sorts said, "we just have to dig deeper"...and it's the society as "we" who will dig deeper here, not the artists, but most people are worried about having transportation and a job and keeping a place to live. how much deeper should they have to dig? it is difficult, and i know she's speaking to other donors like herself, but this is the quandry. people are in rough times.

to do art, that in and of itself is the most profound reward, goal, process and way of being. the eternal question of how to secure resources is a frustrating, but still exciting one to have as problems go...it would be wonderful to pay all artists, but who is going to do that? the government could do more probably, but that's what comes from the people...art and music get cut. that's just how it is. and it's too bad, but i don't know what to do about it necessarily...i think more community based not-for-profit, or non-profit art vans that could be mobile, and go to communities, or schools as special programs......?

i don't know. i don't expect to make money doing anything i do...i've put far more money into hosting people than i've ever received, but many people feel that money is the most important thing to work for, and fame or becoming immortal is a whole other beast which makes each aspect difficult.

i am sure most artists have strong opinions regarding these issues...

zero-point is doing sound, d.s.t. is playing...this will be a stellar party to be sure...! all that creative primal energy...i love this party...this is my favorite time of year.

nomadic transmissions: offerings to the sunrise II was brilliant and healing and restful and crazy and survivalist and the smell of fire...great friends, even greater performances...so glad to have collaborated and performed. *** thanx for all the help*** : setting up, keeping things going, sharing food and coffee (saved my life the morning after)...i really like this new ceremony...i got more out of it this time because we had run shows there before, less unknown variables. and we had most of our lights up, more vision...i think that was successful.

we have an excellent videographer / projectionist who is editing all the footage diligently, so we may have that up and available sooner than soon!...he will also be recording the calarts party.

this show is going to be off the hook...

the desert noise & experimental music festival was great.

there was quite a diversity. and luckily we brought the p.a. which was used as a climbable second stage. after a few power pops we got the spot rigged for the festing and it commenced with projections from phog masheen's own.

xdugef got some great footage we'll see. it was a blast. the local people who run the space are so kind. it was an adventure that i'd like to repeat soon.!

this past weekend was a series of brilliant reunions for il corral/zero-point devotees!

bavab bavab had two shows at echo curio, one curated by dustin (actuary) and one by dung mummy, and we joined the first experimental music day fest at evocal (also curated by dustin) - unfortunately it is also the last because evocal is shutting down for lack of funds...

this spot was so great, it reminded me of zero-point in all the best ways, and bret, the guy who runs it, did a wonderful job at sound, very devoted, and what a challenging lineup...! a real heart stopper for the folks running a place!...i empathized truly..! it was a fabulously harsh show...

east hollywood music festival

zero-point is doing sound for the east hollywood music festival which has been moved to september 12th & 13th (the weekend after classes start at l.a.c.c.)

the area that is east hollywood is a relatively new distinction...when we were first at il corral we didn't know where we were and called the area koreawoodlake (between korea town, hollywood and silverlake)...then one day i received a very nice email from the head of the business association of east hollywood or something and he politely told me that the place we were in was called east hollywood,...so i should have known then that it would diversify then eventually gentrify - and it has done so pretty fast....

but who doesn't love pure luck - the vegan options there on heliotrope have expanded, first including scoops as the place of the most creative gelato on the planet...and the bicycle kitchen and darma punx (which i've never been into) it even has a unique full-sized lingerie shop...and the mandatory tattoo parlor...there are a lot of spots there now that have changed...of course my favorite place in the neighborhood is definitely synchronicity - which i found thanx to pizza paul and some very earth-shaking events!

when il corral was reviewed in city beat long ago the spot we were at was called the 'wonky' part of melrose...meaning it was far from being the notoriously hip strip of buying odd and rare things...and i remember one day i realized that more distinctly: these two fashion divas drove up in a flashy car and asked where melrose was...they were on melrose but they meant where was the famous buying grounds known as melrose by the general public, so we just pointed west....

this music festival is a great idea, but funding ran short recently so the city has had to try again in the fall. the 2 day fest : when it does go off : at the ukranian center - a huge venue - it will go off!

this weekend was incredible. the sounds were fantastically resonant and the performances were stellar, as bright as all the '''i never knew there were so many stars''' sky.

thanx to all who came, played, adventured, absorbed.

i felt a great release as soon as we returned, and i wish i could've kept it longer, but life calls out, shouts, orders for order...and we obey...

but that weekend was a challenge to the self who obeys, it was freedom.

there is nothing greater than freedom, except perhaps love.

there was plenty of both out there, and the connections and experiences will last...

what fun, for the new year we have a show at 662 n. heliotrope (previously il corral)

the name KARMA came from our dear friend borris - who is currently curating in the space - now called 'the breakfast club'

we left il corral's space in dec. 2007 and had our opening at zero-point jan. 2008

since that time i had not been back to heliotrope (our past east hollywood / koreawoodlake / bike district neighborhood)

half a year later - the exact day i gave our notice to leave zero-point - we visited the old il corral, and there was borris in charge of the space!

he had stayed with us often at il corral, then left for the east coast, and we hadn't heard from him in half a year, then it turns out he had returned and had this gig hosting art.

so this show : with live painting, experimental music showcase, dj and general festivities, is a reuniting and feels like especially since we have had to close zero-point)there is so much life and such abundance,you just have to see it, and that is the hardest part.

KARMA is about reunions, about the ether and ultimate connectivity.

KARMA celebrates the time and love put forth, by coming around to a fabulous reality.

i have been joyously working on my site: lotusalley.org, it has been so good to have more time to work on things...it is hard to be on all the time...perhaps i too see this as a dream coming to fruition,in the sense that i can co-curate and not worry about everything else.

it was funny, when i returned to our previous artspace, borris said, "i know why you guys looked like that all the time" he is dealing with many of the same dilemmas we faced, so that is another affirmation that our situation was so challenging constantly.

i don't think people know what the last four years have required. it's just not something people would necessarily think about. at least that seems how it was for most of the shows.

the people who helped us know...without them nothing.

regardless the suffering i survived, we survived and are thriving, on the way to the next manifestation...

and i am so happy, my heart is warmed, my sorrows eased by the thought of seeing so many friends for 2009.

how do civilizations retain life - when the language is spoken, active, empowered, meant to give options not shut down exuberance or experience.

we have two benefits this weekend, one for an orphange playground & the other for a dog named jones who is dying of cancer. very different causes, but compassion.filled and important.

there is an immense amount going on right now. i wish for the days to be filled with shady place from the heat and the nights made loud without a sound complaint.

i wish for all things to manifest to support and encourage such endeavors.

dream as a definition is many things:

the beginning...

i chose these pieces
and tried to accurately place
the words as they were written

the water was rushing in
on a ship and i was stranded in the hull.
as i began to drown
i noticed that i had grown gills,
and swam to the surface
only to descend again
to a new life
as a new creature.

all this climbing
these winding
long roads
steep staircases
does eveyrhwere
lead to nyc?
i have been
hovering over nyc
in my dreams since
98. and i've never
even been.
dream of stairwells
and rooftops and all
my neighbors there.
dream scheme to get
me out of this hot
town to another.
i want wet warm
sweet coastal love.
living in wood and
treehouses and full
plates and wine
stained glasses.
i want my face
stained with
happiness
from my
lovers face.
i want
this loneliness
to fade into
a city of my
possibility.
my owned
heart.
my
self.

i dreampt i was at
a punk show and
the band started by
playing the first set of
chords from some really
early era song,
then there were some
rad lyrics
i don't remember them...

b-movie dream

it
looked familiar.
it was
clearly mine
but i hadn't
been there before.
it held
many of my
things. suddenly
my bicycle
is missing, stolen
by a bunch of
flower face kids.
how will i get
to the garden
now? will i have
to steal someone
else's ride? all
of the panic and
terror over take
me and pulsate

there was
a midget chasing
me -- and a bunch
of my friends - he kept
trying to get us to go
on a scavenger hunt and
drink a potion - we
told him no - and i
said i was bigger
than him and he
couldn't make me -
he kept trying to
scare us and i
was laughing
at him

i dreamed my legs
were all purple from bruises,
and i couldn't remember
how i got them, but it scared
me - they didn't hurt but i
was afraid i might die from it

my dream is to create a
platform from which other dreams
can take flight. these dreams
are those which uplift others
and connect us to our
better selves

to have
only more
of what
i only
am.
only.

health & happiness
for my beauty &
myself etc.

may happiness appear in
both romance & music &
let the love over-vibe all
shades of pain.

i dream of the
connections between
us eliminating the

"evil" to exist in
our collective

i'm in my parent's dining room,
daytime, and hear a
shotgun accompanied with
a scream from my mother
and / or sister.

everyone was a zombie - souls eternal
but dead walking
an old friend
still had his soul
and he protected me

i was an

born as
a
human

dreampt of hanging upside-down from the rung of a fire escape ladder on the top floor of a brick
high rise in nyc. after testing the rungs for stability & hanging for a moment, the ladder gives way
and i fall, expecting certain death due to the height of the building. but in mid-fall, a caucasian
guy flies to my rescue, robing me in a white quilt-like gown (and textured like styrofoam balls),
which seems to slow my descent. it is understood that the guy was an angel, who then brings
me to this ritzy blue-blood party where an older, sophisticated woman comments on the
fashion forwardness of the white quilt gown. i laugh inside at the comedy
of it, and that's all i remember...

i hope that all the vulnerable
creatures will be free from
suffering. only when mankind
realizes that they are not superior
beings, will this happen...

a dream is
a dream
because -
flying on a
small chair to
another dimension,
i met the others
but eventually
i left, went
back to the earth
dimension and became
paralyzed.
until i
woke
and could not
move. until the
sun rose next in
the sky

a powerful magician
leads me through solid stone
we were walking inside solid
stone, two evil ones tried to stop us
on our journey, but we just kept going.
the sensation of walking inside solid stone
through solid rock, was different than air, we
moved slowly, like through really heavy water,
but nothing could stop us, and i could feel
that i was protected and safe.

the theme for this coming month's event is DREAMTIME
we are going to open the collage for written comment on the piece,
(we have already constructed a collective collage at the previous month's event OPPOSITE OF WAR)
and with the concept HOPE IS OUR ONLY WEAPON
we will have people write their dreams on pieces of torn gold paper and they will be attached to the dream circle.

our next event is GEOBIOTIC
it is the idea of : us and the environment.
us and ourselves.

yet brings new definition to what is close

we are the flowering cerebellum
hatching anew everyday
dancing in the rubble
still with cracks and dreams
of many lives
strands that pull the psyche back
to past ephemera : was / been

this is the loud aloud
the noise of industry and circuitry
the ruckus of undergrowth
close to the roots
below the soil
in our own caverns and tunnels
excavated from a culture consumed
with consuming itself

now this
the sounds of central avenue jazz
resonant in the broken concrete
we complete some cycle of culture
and call you sodo
south of downtown
as some destined explosion of sound
underground
in the cool depths away from prying eyes
yet undisguised
open to the elements
but only to a certain few
you who come:

come! the new media circus!
the circle acts of light!

mark the walls!
plant seeds, caught thought, in this garden.
graffiti here on the body of zero-point,
the prophecies and profanities cultivated...

this is entwined manifest
every part and person strung together
in invisible ether
palpable - tangible through experience in the immediate

grown from indomitable chaos
wrangling the unseen into art
giving voice and validity
to periphery

personhood confirmed through collective making

the collective began discussing
what dreamtime feels and looks like.
i decided to try to keep a log
of what my dreams are until the event,
to help guide us in the
direction it will take aesthetically and in purpose.

we will have a dream circle,
which visitors can write their dreams
and attach them
which will then be suspended from the ceiling
at the finish of the evening.

dress as if you are in a dream,
as if you are a dream
come with thoughts and recollections.

catalyzed the graffiti garden at zero-point, our opening was a grand success,
the energy of collaboration was born of this make your mark bathroom graffiti event.

from that we have begun a 13 moon cycle of full art experience. a monthly series.
improv collaborations, art, dance, poetry, spoken word, experimental music, installations...

zero-point's ethos:
we are interested in hosting / fostering experiments in the expressive disciplines: the visual arts, music / sound, and word-based arts form the three ring ‘circle acts’ the structure for the new media ‘art circus’- salon style rowdiness -growing / showing the deliberate dreams at the core of us all.
